With large BP, reeded edge, and complete WW. Although the 1871 proof sovereign is not the rarest of the United Kingdom’s proof sovereigns, it still draws crowds when it appears at auctions or on dealer pricelists. The example on offer here is a slightly scarcer variety of this issue (large BP, milled edge), and has generally clear fields and a deep cameo. The design elements are sharp and the cameo is fresh. Die polish is evident on both sides of the coin, but does not distract at all from its overall pleasing appearance. Very scarce this nice, particularly with the desirable “Deep Cameo” designation by PCGS.
