Australia, 1890 Sydney Sovereign -
McD 180. There are two types of 1890-S sovereigns. One of them is the so-called “Legend 1” obverse, where the tip of the Queen’s crown overlaps the rim denticles, and the “Legend 2” type, where the tip of the Queen’s crown just touches the denticles. In the last five years, I have had about ten Legend 2 specimens in stock, but only three Legend 1 specimens. And whenever an 1890-S sovereign appears on the market (in any grade), it is inevitably a Legend 2. Make no mistake about it: The Legend 1 type is rare and one of the scarcest Jubilee types across the series. The example photographed above is graded PCGS MS63 and is one of the finest examples of this rare type I’ve seen on the market in years. If you’re a sovereign variety collector, this is your coin. Catalogues $4,950 and UNC and $9,250 in Choice UNC in McDonald. Possibly ex-Quartermaster Collection.
