Although the 1899-P sovereign is not a major rarity, it is one of the most popular Perth Mint sovereigns. It is also considered the key date in the Veiled Head sovereign series (although the 1893-M is scarcer). The date is generally well struck, but the fields are often quite baggy, and the lustre tends to be subdued. Amongst Mint State examples graded by PCGS, the average grade is about MS62. Coins graded PCGS MS63 or better are rare. Collectors building a date or type set should aim for MS62, or MS61 at the lowest. Connoisseurs should target MS63 or better.
